February Reading 2/16 -2/23

I tend to get easily distracted by books so the best laid plans don't always go as planned.

Instead of reading down my proposed reading list for February I took a couple of detours. The first two were proposed as our next read at my book club. They didn't get chosen but I wanted to read them anyway and the holds came up available from the library. First up was The People We Keep by Allison Larkin. It's a coming of age novel about a young woman who leaves a crappy home situation to travel the country while encountering people and places and hoping to create a meaningful existence out of the nothing she started with. It's heartbreakingly sad in places but also uplifting. It was one of the selections that we didn't choose for our next book club read.

Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson. An author who writes how to write mystery novel self help books finds himself snowed into a remote hotel where people keep dying. It has it's moments but I'm still waiting to see where it goes.

I'm also listening to Marina by Carlos Ruiz Zafon during my daily commute. It's a YA novel, set in 1980's Barcelona where two teens Oscar and Marina get involved in a crazy mystery that has a bunch of twists and turns and they are constantly in danger from one source or another. I've read at least one of his adult novels, Shadow of the Wind, which was amazing. I'm so glad this one hasn't disappointed (at least not yet).

Back on track of what I said I was going to read this month. Desert Creatures by Kay Chronister. This is a post apocalyptic novel that follows a young disabled woman on her journey through the desert landscape in an effort to be healed. It's in three parts, each part follows her at a different age, I've just finished part I which begins when she's about nine just as her pilgrimage starts. Wow! There's a lot going on here. I don't have any other concrete thoughts at the moment but I'm glad I picked this up.
