My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I've read this before but decided to read it again as a monthly group read. I'd forgotten so much of why I liked it the first time. I can't believe there are something like 17 books in the series now. I better get reading!
Overall, the story was great. Love, love, love the setting. The American Museum of Natural History is my favorite museum and the descriptions of the storage rooms and basements/sub-basements are pretty accurate. There is stuff in there that hasn't been seen in years, is totally forgotten, etc. The public exhibits are just the tip of the iceberg.
Pendergast is a hoot. He's one of my favorite fictional law enforcement agents. He's such a great caricature of a Southern gentleman. I can totally picture him saying "bless your heart" to Coffey who was a useless sack of shit. I'm so glad that Coffey got what was coming to him.
I had completely forgotten the ending. I mean I remembered the museum beast and what happened there but I did not remember Kakawita and what he did in the epilogue.
A solid 4 stars, would read again (in about 10 years) and will continue on with the series. Next up Reliquary, well, to be honest, I have about 10 books that I want to read first but it's definitely on my list of soon.
