The Middle of Somewhere by Sonja YoergMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
Liz Kroft is a young widow who feels that she doesn't deserve love or a successful relationship because of the circumstances surrounding her husband's death. Her decision to backpack the John Muir trail initially involves leaving her boyfriend Dante behind because of a recent action that is causing her even more guilt. Dante is just as determined to share the experience with her despite not being a seasoned backpacker. Situations on the trail will make it impossible for her to keep her secrets intact. Will Liz find absolution? Will it even matter?
The author created very interesting and fully fleshed out characters. Then she added some very suspenseful situations and characters that added extra interest. This is not "typical" chick-lit or woman's fiction despite how it is categorized.
I really liked this story even though it's a departure from my usual fare. The author obviously did her research. I'm not a backpacker myself, but I have read some non-fiction about hiking the Appalachian trail and felt that the descriptions of trail life rang true. Overall, I was impressed with this novel and would like to read her first novel House Broken.
