Review: Vermilion

I loved this book. Loved the characters and the overall story. Unique is how I’d describe the setting and the characters. I’m never going to find another one like this one.

It’s a steampunk, western, with fantastic elements set in the 1800’s. The main character Lou Merriweather is a young genderqueer woman who is a psychopomp. A psychopomp deals with the dead, by making sure that their qi or life force goes where it’s supposed to instead of sticking around and haunting the living. When she finds out that her Chinese brethren are seeking jobs in Cheyanne but then falling off the radar she goes to investigate.

That investigation takes her to a sanitarium owned by a creepy doctor and his minions. And then the story gets even wilder. I so much want there to be more books in this series and I’m thrilled that I got this one in my Nocturnal Reader’s Bookbox. It gets 5 stars I loved it so much.
