The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. DanforthMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
Ugh. This book while well written delves into subject matter that just makes me angry. Cameron Post is a young girl who as she is growing up discovers that she experiences same sex attraction. Because of her upbringing, and the culture (such as it is) of her small town she just knows that it's wrong to feel this way and tries to pretend otherwise.
On the day that poor closeted Cameron first kisses a girl she receives word that her parents have died in a horrific accident. Her first thought, is that they will never know and be disappointed in her for her lesbianism. How awful is that?
As the story comes to a head Cameron gets caught out and her family ships her off to a gay reeducation center. Where they promise to work their magic and get the gay out. I mean, it worked for the guy running the place. This to me is appalling - not that it worked for him - but that her family is so ashamed of her that they are willing to send her away.
If we had half stars, I'd give this one 3.5 - it was well-written and the characters were believable, sympathetic and appealing. 3 - 3.5 is my standard rating for a book that was good but that I won't read again.
