Review: Torchship

Torchship Torchship by Karl K. Gallagher
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Torchship was a very enjoyable read. The cast of characters have personality traits and quirks that make them interesting yet still believable. The story comes together as a series of vignettes that feature the captain and crew of the Fives Full. Which is to say that at times there isn’t a cohesive flow to take the reader from situation to situation. As a reviewer on Amazon said, it is as though the author serialized the action from a role-playing campaign and left out all the mundane parts.

Lots of action, a little bit of romance, politics, kidnappers, spies, terraformers, and non-standard cargo. I am reminded of Firefly, and I think fans of the series would enjoy this novel.

One great debut novel with more from the same universe on the way. Good thing, because there were several threads left hanging and I want to know what happens to those characters.
