The Ciphers of Muirwood (Covenant of Muirwood, #2)The Ciphers of Muirwood by Jeff Wheeler
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The second book in the Covenant of Muirwood trilogy, which is the second trilogy set in this world.

Maia and her grandmother have reached the safety of Muirwood Abbey which is nearing completion. Maia had to leave Feint Collier behind and she's pretty sure that not only that she will never see him again but that if she does he will never forgive her.

At the Abbey Maia is introduced to other young women like herself that have been taught to read and write in secret. But instead of finding a group of confidants it seems that everyone dislikes her for one reason or another. No matter. Maia needs to focus on training to be a maston because her father is coming and unless she can stop him, his arrival will spell doom not just for the Abbey but for the world as she knows it.

Maia needs to pass her maston exams to fulfill the prophecy and open the Apse Veil. If only she could, everyone keeps telling her she isn't ready even the Medium and time is running out.

I liked this book in the series more than the first. Maia is more fully fleshed out and has started to take an active role in her own life. I'm looking forward to book three in the series.
